Rated 5 out of 5 by matta2309 Little Monster I recently rented this lens to take it for a test drive in Alaska. It did not disappoint. The reach is astounding! There were many people toting 100-400mm lens on full frame DSLR cameras, but several of them were frequently looking over my shoulder with this lens and a J4. I've included some images to illustrate the sharpness of this lens. I am by no means a professional, but I was able to get very good images from this set up. Several of these (Eagle and Seals) were taking on a small boat that was rolling all over on a cloudy, rainy day in Juneau. I only include that to illustrate the VR in the lens is very good. The black bears were 100-150 yards away in a meadow (yes some are cropped, but the sharpness is retained). The focus was quick enough to catch the pacific white sided dolphin out of the water. Overall this lens has it all! I hope the images speak for themselves. Most of the images were taken at the full 300mm length. 30 juin 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Manny V Portable 189-810mm equivalent lens. Effective VR. Accurate AF. Sharp images. Excellent Image Quality. Recommended. This lens build quality is fantastic. The external barrel is metal. It feels substantial and effuses quality. Unlike my Nikon1 V2 and 10-30, this lens is Made In Japan. I use it with the Nikon 1 V2 camera. It passes the build quality test. The images this lens produces are sharp with excellent contrast, and pleasing colours. It passes the Image quality test. I use this lens mainly for birding. With the Nikon V2 camera AF capabilities, the focusing is quick, accurate, and definitive. I have shot with it in typical Vancouver weather - which means overcast skies, and not so optimal lighting. The AF performed remarkably under these circumstances. Now I am in my mid 40's and my eyes are not as good at determining whether the subject is in focus. Luckily for me, with the V2 + this lens, the AF is spot on. I usually shoot with center focus point and then recompose. However with the V2 + this lens, I have changed my strategy to auto AF point + subject tracking. Somehow the AF has always been spot on the subject I want to capture. Now this is remarkable as I usually almost never have luck when I leave it to the camera and lens to determine the AF. I feel Nikon has done an amazing job here and I can't stress this point enough that the V2 + this lens = a lot of keepers. For me the keepers (in focus) are 85% plus of my shooting. Also the AF doesn't get tricked by a busy background which is what I frequently encounter in the national parks here. I am sure this lens should perform just as good with the other Nikon 1 cameras. Yes it passes the AF test. The VR is also very good. I fully utilize the Nikon V2 camera's 15fps with electronic shutter capabilities. Again combined with good AF + good VR = lots of keepers. I now have a new challenge as in I have a lot more keepers I have to go through to select the best shot as most of the images are sharp without any blurring or AF inaccuracies. So it passes the VR test. It comes with a hood which is good. The hood is quite deep and that should help with protecting the lens body during transport as I usually reverse mount the hood. And it should help with flare reduction and boost contrast. It has a screw mount for tripod ring. I did not purchase the tripod ring mount as I most likely won't be using tripod. I usually use tripod these days only for long exposure shots such as nightscape. Now if you wish to shoot using tripod, then perhaps you may want to invest in the tripod mount. While UV filter may not be necessary due to the deep hood, I ended up purchasing one. Zoom creep - I call it zoom creep. This is the issue when the zoom lens zooms in as in the lens will extend by itself during travel. This lens is front heavy and will experience zoom creep. There is a lens lock which will prevent zoom creep. Zoom creep doesn't bug me so it is no big deal for me. Price - yes this is an expensive lens. It was a tough decision for me. I sold some of my DSLR lenses to fund this lens. Those DSLR lenses were getting used less frequently as I now have some excellent m.4/3rd glass and now for telephoto I now use the Nikon 1 camera and lens. So yeah it is not an easy decision due to its price. I know I will utilize this lens fully. So finally I took the plunge. While some may argue that given what this lens does, it is a bargain. For me, the material used in this lens should cost about same as the 70-300VR Dx lens. So why is Nikon charging so much for this lens? Yes I feel the pinch but at the same time I bit the bullet and am going to enjoy this lens. Some may ask why I didn't go for the FT1 + 70-300 DX option. Well for me when I am in the field, I want my things to work well for me. If it gets tedious, it will bug me and I won't pick that setup. In fact I did try the FT1 + 70-300 DX option and I realized rather quickly that option would not work for me. So yeah I bit the bullet and got this one. Focal length - covers a 35mm equivalent of 189mm to 810mm. This is simply amazing. A 810mm f5.6 lens? Yes that is the advantage of the Nikon 1's 1" sensor. Niggles - which while are niggles are not worth deducting any stars. 1. No weather sealing - I use a Lenscoat rain cover to overcome this. I wish this lens was weather sealed. 2. Price - yes I will bring it up again 3. I can't think of anything else. Bottom-line - it is a sharp lens, it provides excellent contrast with pleasing colours in images it captures, it provides a telephoto option of 810mm with f5.6, it is highly portable, and very well built lens. It is highly recommended to Nikon 1 system users who want to capture wildlife and birds. 23 avril 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Maak Light Weight, Long Range and Fast I started with a Nikon V1 and liked it. I really thought I would go with the Nikon V3 but because it did not take a SDHC card, I opted for the V2 and liked it so much I bought a second one. I got this lens at the same time as my second V2. And wow, perhaps the best lens for the money of any lens I have ever purchased. I have 9 Nikon cameras from the (1) D3x to (1) D7000 to (4) D90s, and I like them all but the D3x and that has to do with the weight of the camera. I use the D90s and D7000 for most portrait and people work. I have a full compliment of lens. But when I purchased this VR 70-300, I threw my tripod away and now, I use my two V2s with this lens and the motor driven 10-100 almost exclusively for all landscape and video work and they both work incredibly well. I miss the lack of a substantial shallow depth of field, but then I have the other cameras and other lens with them to make that up...but for street work and wildlife and the other, this long lens has no real rival. The lightweight is fantastic, and this is for sure a real professional system. I really regret that the V3 was not built on the same body as the V2 but such is life. I think that was a mistake. 3 février 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by JASPC Brilliant lens The lens surprised me with its crystal clear sharpness. The VR system works extremely well and the focus limiting switch is great to have for long shots against the sky. I use it with a Nikon 1 V3. 14 décembre 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 The "Mighty Mouse" of super telephoto zooms The 1 Nikon CX 70-300 is simply an outstanding lens. It is very sharp throughout the entire zoom range. Colour rendition is stunning. Focusing is fast and accurate, although there can be a slight lag and/or hunting in low light conditions. The VR on this lens is wonderful. I have been able to get good, usable shots at 1/15th of a second with this lens fully extended to 300mm (equivalent field of view of 810mm on a full frame camera). It is light and very easy to hand-hold and carry around with me most of the day. Capturing birds in flight, especially if it is in low contrast situations can be a bit of a struggle with this lens, but that is a quite common thing with mirror-less cameras in general. This lens is also fantastic when used with extension tubes. Overall, this is a superb lens. 9 novembre 2014
